The Henry Project: The Ancestors of King Henry II of England

MALE Foulques (Fulk) V

Count of Anjou, 1109-1129.
Count of Maine (jure uxoris), 1110-1129
King of Jerusalem, 1131-1144.

Fulk V succeeded his father Fulk IV as count of Anjou (and of Touraine) in 1109 (his elder brother Geoffroy having died in 1106), and obtained the county of Maine in 1110 by his marriage to Éremburge, heiress of Maine. His first wife having died in 1126, he was offered the hand of Melisende, daughter of king Baldwin II of Jerusalem, along with the throne of Jerusalem. He departed for Jerusalem in 1129, leaving Anjou, Maine, and Touraine to his son Geoffrey [Chr. S. Serg. Andegav.] and was made king of Jerusalem in1131 [Chr. S. Albini Andegav.]. He was succeeded there successively by Baldwin III and Amalric I, his two sons by Melisende.

Date of Birth: 1089×1092.
[Foulques IV and Bertrada were not married earlier than 1089, and Foulques V was certainly born before Bertrada ran off with Phillipe of France in 1092.]
Place of Birth: Unknown.

Date of Death: 13 November 1143.
[Chr. S. Albini Andegav.: 1143; Chr. S. Serg. Andegav.: 1143; Chr. S. Flor. Salm.: 1141 (sic, but in same year as the death of Pope Innocent II); Will. Tyre xv, 27 (vol. 2, p. 135), xvi, 3 (vol. 2, p. 139): 13 Nov. 1142] William of Tyre is often off on his chronology (as in the case of the death dates of Fulk's sons by his second wife, both also off by a year). Some sources [e.g., ES 2: 82] give 1144, but 1143 (in the same year as Pope Innocent II) seems the most likely.
Place of Death: Akkon.
