Fellows > Scott Andrew Bartley

Scott Andrew Bartley (b. Springfield, Vt., 1959), a native of North Springfield, Vt., has dabbled in genealogy since the age of 11. It started as a school project, when he had five of eight great grandparents alive at his birth with all but one living with a few miles of him. His professional career started went he was hired to join the recently formed Research Service at the New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) in 1984. He had many assignments there, but ended up as their Manuscripts Curator and part-time reference desk librarian until January 1999. It was there that he went back to receive his Master’s in Library Science from Simmons College in 1994. He worked a 24-hour week for the Massachusetts Society Mayflower Descendants (MSMD) as a proofer of lineage applications. He also served as librarian, archivist, and web designer where he started creating a research guide online. He brought together the MSMD and FamilySearch as the first pilot digitization project for FamilySearch. He also had clients with his free time. In 2012 and 2013, he was hired as a Wiki Content Specialist for FamilySearch. He created the state page and all the county pages for Massachusetts. The crowning achievement was an extremely detailed guide to Boston that included inventorying all the town/city records wherever they could be found. NEHGS hired him as a contractor to head the Early Vermont Settlers project in 2015 and where is still is working. This project was split into two parts and he is focused on identifying all the first settlers up to 1771. The project has produced more than 760 sketches (2025) and all the Windsor County settlers published in two volumes. This is only the fourth scholarly prosopography study in the United States – all done by F.A.S.G. members. He was the editor for the Mayflower Descendant (2000-2010) and Vermont Genealogy (2004-2012, 2022-present). His special interest is the descendants of George Lamphere of Westerly. Though he does not take clients anymore, he can be reached at drew@yourgenealogist.com.
