Helen Schatvet Ullmann, CG, FASG, B.A. Mt. Holyoke College, ’59, major in history; M.A. Northeastern University, ’69, degree in literature, mostly American. She is associate editor of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, editor of Western Massachusetts Families in 1790, a project of the New England Historic Genealogical Society, and copy editor for MASSOG and the Connecticut Nutmegger. She was born in the Norwegian colony (Bay Ridge) in Brooklyn, New York. Her grandfather, Einar Schatvet, was born in Fet, Norway. (Schatvet is the name of a farm in Fet.) Einar’s wife’s father, Axel Theodor Olsen, was born in Holmestrand, Norway. She has done extensive research on their ancestors, indexed many Norwegian church and probate records, and given them to the Family History Library. Otherwise her ancestry is southern New England.
She married in 1959 Laurence “Laurie” Emery Ullmann, Amherst ’59; Harvard Business School ’61; Harvard Graduate School of Education, ’66, retired high-school physics teacher and a good genealogist himself. Their son is deceased but they have three daughters, all teachers. Helen and Laurie were directors of the Nashua, N.H., Family History Center for about seven years.
